Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring in the first half and then a 17 minute hat trick from Karim Benzema gave Madrid a 3-2 win and a place in the quarterfinals.

The loss sparked a furious reaction from the French club in the immediate aftermath of the match, with president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Leonardo seeking to confront the referee over what they called a "shameful" decision to not rule out Benzema.

According to sources, Donnarumma and the Brazil forward squared up to each other in the dressing room after the goalkeeper made a mistake that led to Benzema's goal.

Donnarumma allowed himself to be closed down by Benzema and as he tried to clear the ball, he passed it to Vinicius Junior who pulled it back for Benzema to make it 2-2.

The keeper pointed out that Luka Modric drove forward to start the move that ended with Benzema leveling the tie in the 76th minute.

The incident that led to Madrid's first goal was described by Mauricio Pochettino as a clear foul.

He said it was impossible to accept. We were the better team. It is so disappointing.

The game's emotion changed. It is difficult to manage the situation at Real Madrid because of their belief. The team was affected. It is so unfair. It changed the way the game was played.
