  • We drove a $40,000 electric SUV.

  • It has a good driving range, a comfortable interior, and three years of free charging.

  • The ID.4 lacks buttons.

Consumers are considering changing to an electric vehicle because of rising gas prices and compelling new models. A growing field of battery-powered offerings has made it harder to buy.

The $40,000 Volkswagen ID.4 was one of the most popular new EV's. VW's first electric SUV for the US delivers a solid driving range and an accessible experience, but it isn't without its sticking points.

The Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S we drove came out to over $50,000. The pros and cons of VW changing things for 2022, we came away with still hold.

Pro: Healthy range

Volkswagen has beefed up range across the ID.4 lineup for the 2022 model year, despite the fact that the ID.4 already exhibited solid range in the 2021 model we tested. The cheapest rear-wheel-drive model now has an EPA rating of 280 miles, up from 260. You can still get up to 251 miles with all-wheel drive.

This is quite respectable when you compare it to other electric SUVs. The base Mach-E has a range of over 200 miles.

Pro: An SUV that doesn't ask you to change

The ID.4 may feel more accessible than some of its competitors. It has a comfortable interior that is not tech-heavy and is styled like a popular gas-powered crossovers.

The ID.4 feels lively when you stomp on the pedal, but it doesn't feel like a sporty electric option like the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The ID.4 will slow itself down and charge the battery through a process calledgenerative braking, but it doesn't brake as aggressively as other electric cars. It was important for the ID.4 to coast like a regular SUV so that consumers wouldn't confuse it with a gas vehicle.

The ID.4 is an electric SUV that makes the transition away from gasoline as smooth as can be.

Pro: Cheaper than the Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E

The ID.4 starts at around $40,000, a few thousand dollars less than the Mach-E and a full $19,000 less than the most popular electric SUV in the US.

Pro: Free charging

For three years. VW is offering a reward of no-cost fast charging for customers who buy an ID.4. The second-largest network of EV charging plugs in the US is owned by Volkswagen's Electrify America.

Con: No frunk

The ID.4 doesn't have the things people love about electric cars. The extra cargo area under the hood of many battery-powered vehicles makes use of space that would normally be taken up by a gas engine. You can get this in a lot of electric vehicles. It isn't a dealbreaker, but you won't get a drink in the ID.4.

Con: Frustrating interior tech

Touch-sensitive buttons are used for the volume, climate control, and other key functions. These buttons are cool but not very useful in a car. It is nearly impossible to understand what you are tapping without looking away from the road.
