Two former intensive care nurses at Mount Carmel Health testified Wednesday that they administered large amounts of the drug to the same patient at the direction of William Husel.

The second nurse testified that he was unaware that his colleague had given the same dose to the patient.

The dosages were prescribed by Husel, who was the attending physician at the time, for Ryan Hayes, who was an overdose patient who was considered comatose during his two-day admittance to the hospital.

Tyler Springer testified that he had no idea that his nurse colleague Troy Rudman had given the same dose to Hayes.

The former Mount Carmel executive says that Husel was only ordering high amounts of Fentanyl.

'The highest amount of medication that I had given'

Springer testified that the case was memorable because it was the highest amount of medication he had ever given.

Springer testified that he recorded the pain on a scale of 1-10 for several hours leading up to the overdose. Springer said he had changed the pain score to 10 because he was anticipating that removing the breathing tube would be uncomfortable.

I knew he had pain. He said that he noticed that he was turning blue.

Previous doctors testified that if used at all, it would only be used for pain relief and not in one IV dose as Husel had prescribed.

Diane Menashe, one of Husel's defense attorneys, asked if Springer noted that he injected the Fentanyl in a single dose prior to logging the highest possible pain score.

Springer was asked if he would assign a pain score to a patient if he did not think it was necessary. Springer would only do it if it was necessary.

A colleague of William Husel's at Mount Carmel says she never overrode drug doses.

Nurses testify about working with Husel

Both nurses were asked if they liked Husel and if he was easy to work with. Both said yes.

Is it fair to say that he was easy to talk to? Is it possible to be accessible? Rudman was willing to take the time to answer questions.

Rudman had worked with Husel on more than 50 different exhubations, where patients breathing tubes are removed, and he was there in his role as a rapid response nurse.

Rudman said that any time he was called it was for an emergency.

He testified that he frequently overrode the machines because of the emergency status and Husel's direction.

Both nurses were asked if they could tell if a doctor had different techniques. Both of them agreed.

Background of William Husel case

The Mount Carmel hospital fired a number of employees in the wake of the Husel scandal, which involved the deaths of more than 30 patients. The two nurses are working in different fields.

Husel was charged with 25 counts of murder. Gary Tyack, a Democrat elected in 2020 to replace O&Brien, directed the withdrawal before the trial of 11 counts, leaving the former doctor facing 14 counts at trial.

According to testimony, he arrived at Mount Carmel in full cardiac arrest after being found in a bathtub. His son drove from North Carolina and agreed to remove his father's breathing tube.

Nurse testifies about patient Sandra Chard's pain

In the afternoon testimony, a former night shift nurse, who worked at the hospital, said she gave a 1,000-microgram dose of the drug to an elderly patient and was told by her colleagues that it was appropriate.

Stephanie LeChard, a former night-shift nurse with Mount Carmel Health, listens to a question Wednesday during her testimony in the trial of former health system doctor William Husel on 14 counts of murder at the Franklin County Courthouse.

LeChard said that Dr. Husel told him to draw it up in a different room.

LeChard testified that the patient wasgurgling loudly, grimacing in pain and had a tear running down her cheek, and discussed the agony her family was going through.

She said that the patient looked a little more relaxed after she administered the dosage.

The patient died after being given a single, IV dose.
