Invasive species such as spotted lantern flies, Burmese pythons, and Zebra mussels arewreaking havoc on the U.S.

If you haven't seen the Joro spider yet, you may be introduced to it if you live on the East Coast.

The yellow spider, which can get as big as the palm of your hand, was first spotted in Georgia. There is no clear answer as to how it got into the United States other than it probably came in a shipping container. The species has spread quickly across Georgia and other parts of the Southeast.

The Joro spider could take over much of the East Coast in the coming years according to scientists from the University of Georgia.

Andy Davis, research scientist at Georgia's Odum School of Ecology and co-author of the study, said in a statement that people should try to live with them.

The joro spider, a native of Asia, has become a common sight in neighborhoods in Athens and across Northeast Georgia.

The golden silk spider was compared to the Joro spider by scientists. The golden silk spider, also known as thebanana spider, is from the tropical regions of Central and South America and took over the southeast U.S. around 150 years ago.

The golden silk spider population has grown, but it has yet to expand into the North because of its susceptibility to cold. The scientists collected the two species and measured numerous physical traits as well as how they adapted to different environmental conditions, including brief periods of temperatures below freezing.

The Joro spiders had a metabolism that was twice as high, a higher heart rate in low temperatures, and they survived more time in the cold than the golden silk spider. Some regions of Japan have climates similar to the Northeast.

While we should not draw sweeping conclusions from this comparison of just two species, it is at least clear that the Joro spider has a physiology that is more suited to a cooler environment than its congener.

A customer at Mcdonalds had a chicken and bacon wrap with a side of a spider.

A new species of spider has been discovered. A spider crawls out of bamboo.

Humans can hitch rides on vehicles and in containers, which can help determine how far the species could spread. He heard reports of someone accidentally transporting a spider to Oklahoma.

The size of the spider may scare some people, but experts say they shouldn't worry. Unless they are cornered, they don't bite humans. Their fangs do not penetrate human skin.

University of Georgia entomologist Nancy Hinkle told USA TODAY in September that Joro spiders help control pests like mosquitoes, flies and stink bugs. The impact on the Southeast and its species has yet to be determined.

If you run into a Joro spider, let them be, says Benjamin Frick, a graduate student at the University of Georgia and study co-author.

There is no reason to actively squash them. Don't blame the Joro spider.

The Joro spider could soon be found throughout the East Coast.
