In Washington Square Park in New York City, a sand painter named Joe Mangrum creates colorful artwork. He has spent 10 years honing the skills needed to create these designs, which require complete control of the muscles in his hands. He showed us how he can move his hands at different speeds to create designs.

  • After leaving London during the first COVID-19 lock-up,Jessie Hutter discovered TikTok art.

  • It inspired her to get back to her creative roots, and has become a lucrative side hustle.

  • This is the story of Jessie.

The as-told-to essay was edited for length and clarity after it was based on a conversation with a friend.

TikTok became a beacon of hope for creativity and community during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

I had been living in London for five years and working as a producer at an advertising agency, but I didn't have the time or brainpower to do anything creative outside of work. After accepting a remote job offer in 2020, I moved to rural North Devon for a better work-life balance. I found myself scrolling through TikTok.

A video of someone making art stopped me in my tracks in October 2020.

TikTok has a huge trend of Resin art videos. They show people using liquid and color to create unique patterns andtextures, which when dried, form a durable plastic.

The colors that I had seen on my travels reminded me of the finished pieces. I was in awe of the videos of people pouring and mixing colors together and I would often lay in bed thinking about it at night.

I ordered a beginner's kit less than a month later. I didn't think it would turn into a side hustle.

Creating resin art was harder than it looked on TikTok

My grandmother taught me to paint when I was a child, and I have always enjoyed making things with my hands. I lost my childhood creativity while working in London, but I was inspired by the art videos on TikTok.

It looks more complicated than it is.

When applied, the heavy liquid can be hard to control. The final product can sometimes look different to what you had planned because the colors can easily flow into one another. Unlike painting a picture, you have to give up control.

To prevent sagging, bending, and accidental movement, the flat surfaces need to be applied with acrylate. I accidentally worked from a table when I first tried it. My design slid into a puddle on the floor because my canvas board was too much of an angle.

It was in those times that I remembered my artist grandmother. It was a way for me to honor her. I had to reignite my creativity.

My new hobby became more expensive than I'd imagined

50 cents per ounce is the average cost of the material. This doesn't sound like much, but most art pieces require a large amount of resin. I use one mixed gallon to cover 12 square feet at a thickness of an eighth of an inch.

The price went up due to environmental concerns. I use the highest-grade non-toxic resin because I am passionate about the reduction of single-use plastic. There is a need for safety equipment to protect you from toxins, including protective clothing, a respirator mask, and nitrile gloves, as well as additional tools needed to form and shape the resin, including molds, color pigments, and decorations.

I realized that I couldn't afford to sustain my new hobby as I continued to develop my craft and spend more money.

Since I began selling my art, it's evolved into a huge part of my life

In November 2020, friends began to commission me for art after I posted a picture of my work on social media. I started making my first batches to be sold to the public and developed a website.

I sold out after uploading the first batches. The same thing happened with the second and third batches. I made over $2,500 in website sales within a year. I had my first pop-up display at a local cafe in November 2021.

In December of 2021, I received a direct message from a gallery curator with an invitation to show my work at an abstract art exhibition. I wanted to turn the offer down because I thought I was not good enough. I took the opportunity after resisting imposter syndrome.

People will be able to view my work at The Brick Lane Gallery in London because of a creative side-hustle that I discovered on TikTok.

I want to make it if there are people who want to buy my work. I hope my grandmother would be proud that I chose a life filled with more creativity, because I pour colors from memories of beautiful places into my art.
