There were rumors that Apple might unveil a new Mac mini, but instead we got the all-new Mac Studio, which is a mix between a Mac mini and a Mac Pro. A new version of the Mac mini is still in the works, despite the introduction of the Mac Studio.
9to5Mac claims that Apple will use the M2 chip in the next Mac mini. There are two versions of the Mac mini, one with a standard chip and another with a M2 chip.
Mark Gurman, a reporter for the financial publication, has already heard about the M2 chip. It is expected to feature the same 8-core processor, but with speed and efficiency improvements, along with a 9 or 10 core graphics card.
We don't know full details yet, but it could feature a 12-core processor. The current M1 Pro chip has a 10-core processor and 16-core graphics card. The latest version of macOS Monterey references the chip in testing.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple had plans to introduce high-end versions of the Mac mini with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips.
There were rumors that a redesign of the Mac mini could include a smaller enclosure, a plexiglass like top, and two-tone color options.
The fact that Apple left the Intel model in the lineup suggests that the Mac mini is not going to be phased out. The older Intel version of the mac mini is still being sold alongside the 2020 version.
There is no word on when a refresh will take place, but Gurman has suggested that Apple could introduce additional Mac updates as soon as May or June.
