A county election clerk in Colorado has been indicted by a grand jury for her part in a scheme to subvert voting technology. Tina Peters, a Republican who was elected to oversee elections in Mesa County, was charged with 10 felony and misdemeanor counts. The deputy clerk is facing charges. Peters has appeared with supporters of former President Donald Trump who made false claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. Peters is going to launch a campaign for Colorado secretary of state. The indictment alleged that Peters and Knisley were part of a deceptive scheme which was designed to influence public servants, breach security protocols, exceed permissible access to voting equipment, and set in motion the eventual distribution of confidential information to unauthorized people. An email seeking comment from Peters was not immediately returned. An arrest warrant had been issued. An attorney for Knisley did not return a call. In Mesa County, a photo and video of confidential voting system passwords were posted on social media and a conservative website. Mesa County, a largely rural area on the border with Utah that Donald Trump won in the 2020 presidential election with over half of the vote, has unique passwords maintained by the state. President Joe Biden won Colorado with a high percentage of the vote. Peters appeared at a cybersymposium hosted by MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, who promised to reveal proof of Trump's claims of a stolen election. Attendees and state officials said that a copy of Mesa County's voting system hard drive was distributed and posted online. The software used by election offices around the country was included in the copy. The unauthorized release provided a potential practice environment that would allow anyone to look for vulnerabilities that could be exploited in a future election, according to experts. Peters has previously said she didn't know how the copy came to be distributed and wouldn't say who was with her when the copy was made. In an interview with The Associated Press earlier this year, Peters said that he didn't go in to address some conspiracy theory. State officials in various court documents have outlined what happened. The county was asked for a list of people who would be present for a routine visit by the state to prepare voting systems. The software that manages elections is replaced with the original version when files from the previous election are deleted. This is a security measure that makes sure election officials use the same software. According to the indictment, Peters introduced a person as a county employee during the state officials visit for thetrusted build. The person is believed to have made two copies of the county's voting system hard drive, one before and one after a visit by state officials. The person whose name and background check was presented to state officials before the visit testified before the grand jury that they were never hired by the county, according to the indictment. She said she had the authority to make the copies. Peters was not allowed to make a copy of the entire hard drive because he was only allowed to back up certain files. Federal authorities are looking into it. In the meantime, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold persuaded a judge to prohibit Peters from overseeing last year's elections in Mesa County and has asked for a similar injunction in this year's elections. Officials tasked with carrying out elections do so in public trust and must be held accountable when they abuse their power or position, according to a statement by a Democrat seeking re-election this year.
