McDonald's, an icon of post-Soviet Russia, has said it will temporarily close all of its restaurants in the country.

The fast-food chain said it would pay salaries to its 62,000 employees in Russia.

In an open letter to employees, McDonald's president and CEO Chris Kempckinski said that McDonald's values mean we cannot ignore the needless human suffering unfolding in Ukraine.

Because of its large size and global reach, the chain is copied by other companies if it takes a stance on an issue or makes a major operational change.

The Big Mac became available in Russia in 1990 when McDonald's opened in the final months of the Soviet Union.

Over 30,000 people lined up for a first taste of U.S. fast food, representing the thaw of Cold War tensions and an increasing appetite among young people for a slice of Americana.

Steve Rosenberg, the Moscow correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation, commented on the significance of the decision.

When McDonald's opened its first restaurant in Moscow, iron curtains were crumbling and Russia was embracing the West, he wrote. McDonald's is temporarily closing its restaurants in Russia. Hugely symbolic.

In 1990 I was in the queue when McDonald's opened its 1st restaurant in Moscow: when iron curtains were crumbling & Russia was embracing the West. Today McDonald's announced it is temporarily closing its 850 restaurants in Russia. Hugely symbolic.
