A new cruise ship docked in Houma for the first time this week.

The Viking Mississippi was floated out on Monday at the LaShip shipyard.

The maiden voyage of the 386-guest ship will be between New Orleans and St. Paul in June.

The new ship met the American waterway for the first time, and it was a proud moment, according to the news release. We are grateful to our American partner, who has helped bring to life our vision of exploring the Mississippi in the viking way.

The float-out in Houma is significant because it means a ship is moving into its final stage of construction.

In keeping with maritime tradition, the ship's ceremonial godmother, Dionne Chouest, assisted with the float out.

The new Mississippi River trips are expected to bring more than 7,000 guests to the region this year and 17,600 in the first full sailing season in 2023 according to Viking.

Baton Rouge, Darrow, New Orleans and St. Francisville are in Louisiana.

The ship is 450 feet long and 75 feet wide and has guest rooms ranging in size from 268 to 1,024 square feet. The ship, which took about two years to build, is owned and operated by Galliano-based Chouest.

Viking has not said how much the ship cost, but the company said in the past that it hoped to build several of the vessels for about $90 million to $100 million apiece.
