In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Leonid Nevzlin, an industrialist and former oil tycoon, gave up his Russian citizenship.

He is one of a small group of Russian elites who are speaking out against the war on Ukraine.

I no longer want to wear Russian citizenship as a stamp of shame. Nevzlin wrote in the post that he was against the war. I don't like the occupation. I don't like the genocide of the Ukrainian people.

I cannot afford to be a citizen of a country that kills children of other countries, he said.

The removal of his citizenship is likely symbolic. SRAS says formal renunciation can take anywhere from six to 12 months.

The Russian oil giant Yukos was co-founded by Nevzlin and his friend and business partner, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who spent nearly a decade in a Russian prison after being charged with fraud and tax evasion.

During the Yukos investigation, Nevzlin fled to Israel, claiming he was the victim of political persecution.

He was sentenced to life in prison for murder and financial crimes in 2008, but he has denied the charges. Israel has refused to extradite Russia.

He is an outspoken critic of Russian President Putin. He told CNN last week that Putin's invasion of Ukraine has reduced his chances of remaining in power.
