We have become very creative with the terms we use to describe relationship dynamics. Have you heard of breadcrumbing?

Breadcrumbing is an act of giving someone just enough attention to keep them interested. It is an act of leading someone on or stringing them along.

This can look like someone sending you flirtatious texts, social media interactions, or hints at meeting up without being specific or following through. When we are about to call it quits, they offer more crumbs to keep us interested.

The person I was with disappeared. How to get over being ghosted.

If they were not interested, no one would waste their time breadcrumbing. Wrong.

The principles behind breadcrumbing have always existed, even though this term is associated with online dating. Have you ever been in a relationship where the person does everything they can to keep you in their life, but never gives you what you need or want? Have you noticed how right it is to end things with flowers or a weekend trip? breadcrumbing happens before the relationship starts.

What is a situationship? How to not be in one.

Here are some common reasons why someone may choose to leave breadcrumbs:

  • They are trying to get attention.

  • They are in a relationship and want to have a backup plan.

  • They don't want to commit, but they like you.

  • They are not going to let you go.

  • They are lonely.

  • They don't want to risk rejection by showing up.

  • They don't know what they want.

If there is a connection, the person is less concerned about exploring the relationship if they are interested and more concerned about making sure you are. This process is conscious for some and not for others.

Asking these questions is important when going on a first date.

How to handle breadcrumbing

It's a good idea to set a specific time. Some people are shy. Giving them the benefit of the doubt and setting specific plans can help you determine if what is happening is really bad planning.

Have a conversation with them. Sometimes calling them out can help clarify the situation. Explaining what you have observed can bring to their attention what they are doing, but it can also signal a need for them to change their behavior if they want to continue having any sort of relationship with you.

One glass of wine is my limit, and I am not comfortable sexting.

Talk about your goals. It is worth asking them what their goal is with continuing to communicate if there is a lot of plans and promises. Many may be scared to ask this question, but it is not a demand or an ultimatum.

Stand up for what you want. If your ideal process of getting to know people doesn't involve putting your life on hold for someone who doesn't seem to be following the same level of commitment or enthusiasm, it may be time to move on. It is important to have a realistic expectation and not accept less.

Work on your self-esteem. We are likely to believe that we deserve the crumbs if we believe that we are not worthy of anyone's time or commitment.

I want to remind you that you don't deserve anything less than a whole cake.

I don't have to sleep with someone for them to like me. I keep forgetting.
