The ship that went down in 1915 was made of wood. While the explorer and his party had planned to be the first humans to cross Antarctica, their goals were disrupted when they became stuck in the ice.

The team abandoned the ship because it became clear that it would sink. The party of survival was led by Shackleton, who rowing a whaleboat 800 miles to the island of South Georgia.

Say Cheese!

The ship has been under the ice for more than a century, but initial images show it is in good shape. There is an image of the stern with the name EndURANCE above a five-pointed star on the rear deck.

The ship is considered a historical monument under the terms of the agreement signed by the US and twelve other countries. The undersea drones did not touch the ship.
