Republic of Ireland Under-21 manager Jim Crawford confirmed that Rangers player Charlie McCann has switched his international eligibility to Northern Ireland.

The Republic's Under 17s and Under 19s have been played by McCann.

The 19-year-old has impressed for the Scottish club's B team since joining from Manchester United in a deal worth a reported 750,000 dollars.

The Republic's Under-21 boss spoke to Charlie a few weeks ago.

Crawford said that it was unfortunate that he was looking to play with Northern Ireland.

The 2002 group that haven't been involved in international football for so long was at risk.

I told Charlie that we have talented players like Will Smallbone, Ross Tierney, andGavin Kilkenny. Charlie is a very good player, but he didn't get ahead of them.

Dublin-born Darragh Burns is in the process of securing his international eligibility for the Republic having represented both countries at youth level.
