The University of Maryland Medical Center used a pig heart to save a patient's life.

USA TODAYUSA TODAY

David Bennett received a pig heart in place of his failing one and died Tuesday.

Bennett had been recovering after receiving a transplant at the University of Maryland Medical Center. The hospital announced his death on Wednesday.

Bennett was the first patient to receive a genetically modified animal organ.

There was no obvious cause identified at the time of his death, and researchers plan to conduct a thorough review of his death and publish the results in a peer-reviewed journal.

We are devastated by the loss of Mr. Bennett. He was a brave and noble patient who fought all the way to the end. Bennett was known by millions of people around the world for his courage and steadfast will to live.

The field of xenotransplantation hopes to solve the human organ shortage by using the investigative surgery that added two months to Bennett's life.

We have gained valuable insights that the genetically modified pig heart can function well within the human body while the immune system is adequately suppressed.

The history of medicine shows examples of experimental procedures that did not make a difference in the first few patients, but eventually transformed medicine. About 40,000 organ transplants are performed in the United States alone each year, and were mostly experimental from the 1950s to the mid-1980s.

The transplant raised ethical concerns among animal rights activists, who believe animals should not be sacrificed for human benefit, and among some who objected to Bennett, who had served time in prison for attacking a man with a knife.

Bennett had a heart-lung transplant at the University of Maryland Medical Center in October 2021.

He wasn't eligible for a human heart transplant because he wasn't compliant with earlier medical recommendations. Studies have shown that patients who do not follow their doctors orders do not fare well with an organ transplant, and only a very limited number of human hearts are available for transplant.

Bennett was not a good candidate for an artificial heart pump because of his erratic heart beat.

He agreed to be the first person to receive a pig heart because he wanted to prove himself worthy of a human heart.

His new heart performed well for weeks without any signs of rejection. Bennett, who was extremely weak from so much time in bed, was able to sit up and watch the Super Bowl with his physical therapist, even singing along with a performance of America the Beautiful.

He told his caregivers how much he wanted to go home to.

David Bennett, Jr. thanked the hospital and doctors for his care.

He said in a statement that his father recovered from the transplant and that they were able to spend some time together.

His son hopes that his father's experience will help other people live longer with pig organs.

He said that they hope the story can be the beginning of hope and not the end. Fight like Dave.
