The last statewide mask mandate in the U.S. will be lifted by March 26, Hawaii Gov. David Ige announced Tuesday.

No states will require masks indoors after midnight. March 25. Washington state's mask mandate expires at midnight, and Hawaii is the last state to drop the safety measure. Friday.

Ige said that Hawaii's COVID-19 case counts are decreasing. The seven-day new case average is 140, he said, while a week ago it was more than 300. There were 48 patients in the hospital Tuesday. The number has been under 50 for the first time since last summer.

He thinks the downward trends will continue.

The state of Hawaii requires face masks. Initially it was both indoors and outdoors.

The state of Hawaii was able to tolerate the mask rule for so long because of its culture of caring for others.

I believe that we are the last community to release the mask mandate because we care about each other and we are willing to sacrifice to keep each other healthy and safe.

Hawaii health officials still recommend wearing masks indoors.

Hawaii will lift its COVID-19 requirement for travelers when the mask mandate ends. Those arriving from other places in the U.S. won't have to show proof of vaccinations or negative tests to avoid sequestering themselves for five days.

Hawaii has the lowest rates of COVID-19 in the country because of these rules.

A Bronx, New York, resident said her Hawaii summer vacation was not hindered by wearing a mask indoors.

It was so strict there. She said that they had to wear masks everywhere they went. It is an island. I understand. You don't have a lot of hospitals.

Even if it is not mandatory, she will continue wearing a mask when indoors around people.

She said that most of her friends agree that we should wear masks to protect ourselves.

Many people will keep masks on.

Some will do it out of caution. She encouraged those who feel more comfortable wearing masks to do so.

On Monday, the lieutenant governor recommended that the mandate be lifted on or before March 25.
