The National Archives and Records Administration has provided the House committee investigating the Capitol riot with a new trove of Trump Administration documents, which may include material on former Vice President Mike Pence's role in certifying the 2020 presidential election.
The National Archives confirmed to Politico on Tuesday that the latest round of documents had been sent to the January 6 committee.
National Archivist David Ferriero said February 16 the archives would turn over the latest batches of records to the committee by Thursday if the court didn't stop them.
White House counsel Dana Remus said in a February letter that President Joe Biden ordered the National Archives to hand over materials subpoenaed by lawmakers within 30 days of notifying Trump of the request.
After Trump's allies tried to convince Vice President Mike Pence to reject Biden's win in the presidential election, the documents may contain material on his role in certifying electoral votes.
The committee's sole motivation was to prevent Trump from running for president again, he said.
The archives didn't reply to the request for comment.
Trump filed a lawsuit last year to block the House committee's requests for records from his administration, which his lawyers characterized as a legally arbitrary campaign. The request for documents on the role of Vice President Mike Pence in the 2020 presidential election may be related to a strategy put forth by a former Trump legal adviser.
Some of the Trump Administration documents were ripped up and taped back together, and the National Archives have struggled to organize and retrieve them. Some Trump allies disobeyed subpoenas during the committee's investigation into the Capitol riot. The committee subpoenaed Guilfoyle after she cut short an earlier voluntary interview.
The documents most recently turned over to the committee may be related to the Gohmert lawsuit. The suit was filed by Gohmert and several other Republicans in order to give Pence the power to determine the winner of the election. The lawsuit was thrown out on December 31 after a Texas federal judge ruled that Gohmert and the other people had insufficient standing.
The Committee Subpoenas says she helped inite the Capitol Riot.
Why are these GOP leaders upset with Mike Pence? To try and change the outcome of the election.
