Apple filled a gaping hole in its product lineup Tuesday by announcing the Mac Studio, a powerful desktop that runs on the company's new M1 Ultra chip.
The Mac studio is available on March 18. The $200 discount is given to schools and educational buyers.
The Mac mini with M1 is meant for everyday consumers and the Mac Pro is for professionals, but the Mac studio is for content creators who don't have a lot of money. The high-end mini, whose previous versions ran on Intel chips, is expected to be replaced by Mac Studio, which uses Apple Silicon.
The cube-shaped design of the Mac Studio seems to be inspired by Apple's Power Mac G4 Cube, a computer that failed commercially after it was launched in 2000. The Studio is a very small computer for the performance it promises. The machine has a square footprint of 7.7 inches and a height of 3.7 inches.
Apple claims that the fan design on the inside will keep the studio quiet. There are four Thunderbolt 4 ports for connecting display and peripherals, as well as a high-impedance headphone/mic jack. There are two ports on the front, one of which is M1 Ultra. There are two things that are included in the internet: wi-fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0.
The Mac Studio can be equipped with either an M1 Max or the new 20-core M1 Ultra processor, which is Apple's most powerful chip. The Apple Silicon has up to 128 of RAM and 64 of M1 Max storage options.
According to Apple, the Mac Studio with M1 Max is 50% faster than the 16-core Mac Pro and has 3.4x better graphics. The M1 Ultra chip of the Max Studio is 40% faster than the Mac Pro and 3.8 times faster than the iMac. The Studio is 80% more powerful than the Mac Pro. Apple says it can run 18 streams of 8K videos.
The Mac Studio requires less energy than a high-end PC desktop, according to Apple.
