  • Google is working on a new archiving function for Android.
  • The feature will allow users to remove parts of apps without completely uninstalling them.
  • This will enable the apps to be quickly restored while also temporarily freeing  up storage space.

On Tuesday, it was announced that a new archive tool is in the works to help users free up storage on their phones. When an app is archived, it will save certain data on the phone and remove parts that the user doesn't need. Around 60% of app storage can be reclaimed with this.

The benefit of this is that it can help save storage and that apps can be easily restored.

Thanks to App Bundles, the size of complex apps on the best phones has been brought down. As they accumulate more data, apps can grow in size. Users may not want to uninstall an app if they think they need it later on. If users are facing storage constraints, the new app archiving method should help alleviate those concerns. This will benefit developers by leading to fewer uninstalls.

The new feature will be available to developers using App Bundles. If an app gets archived, the new Archive APK will be used to retain user data. While a specific time frame was not provided for the launch, we could see this feature arrive alongside the new version of the operating system.
