The Los Angeles Clippers and wide receiver Mike Williams have reached an agreement on a three-year, $60 million deal that includes $38 million in guaranteed money and $28 million in the first year, according to a source.
Williams made a base salary of $15.68 million last season after the Chargers picked up his fifth-year option.
He had the best season of his five-year career last year, setting career highs in catches and yards while adding nine touchdown catches, one short of his previous career best. He had more catches and more yards than his previous highs.
He had six tying or go-ahead touchdown catches this past season, the most in the league since 1989.
Williams delivered in the clutch when the quarterback looked to him. He created space on a 53-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter of the game against Pittsburgh. Williams had a game-tying 12-yard touchdown catch on the final play of regulation against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 18.
Rather than relying on his size and jumping ability on contested throws, the Bolts gave Williams the ball to him on a lot of quick, short routes and let him flip the script.
It worked. Williams had big games against the Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns.
Williams missed four games in his first season after being the 7th pick in the draft because of an injury. In his five seasons with the Bolts, Williams has 227 catches for 3,662 yards and an average of 16.1 yards per catch.
