Congress is racing against the clock to fund the government, and it looks like the meals for children at school could be in jeopardy.

The Washington Post reported on Monday that some Republican lawmakers, including Senate Minority LeaderMitch McConnell, are opposing the inclusion of a free school lunch measure in the government funding package. A Republican leadership aide told the Post that further extensions of expiring programs would be too costly and that Congress has until midnight on Friday to pass a package to keep the government funded and avoid a federal shutdown.

The US Department of Agriculture Sec made a request to speak to Leader McConnell and Leader McCarthy. Tom Vilsack told the Post that they have a lot on their plate. Kids are going to have less on their plates because of the failure of Republicans to respond to this. There is no reason for this. There is no reason for this.

The School Nutrition Association has sent 73,000 emails to Congress urging an extension of the universal school lunch program, according to a report by a reporter.

The US Department of Agriculture launched a program in April that gives free meals to all K-12 students, regardless of income, through the end of June, which the department said would reach an estimated 12 million kids who are food-insecure. If the program is not extended, the department estimates 40% of the funding for school lunches will be cut.

The lack of a free school meal extension is not certain because the funding package is not final, according to sources. The child tax credits expired in December, causing millions of children to slip back into poverty, if Congress fails to extend them.
