The Miami Dolphins placed the franchise tag on Mike Gesicki.
The tag on Gesicki will be used by Miami.
The deadline for Miami was Tuesday at 4 p.m. He would have become a free agent if the tag was not placed on him.
Gesicki will make $10.9 million under the franchise tag in 2022.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald noted that it would have been a surprise if the Dolphins let the talented playmaker go elsewhere, but they didn't give him a contract extension like they did with other draftees.
Miami had the option of signing him to a long-term deal, franchising him or watching him leave.
When he was talking about the Dolphins, Gesicki stayed on the tag, even though he said he enjoyed every single aspect of being in this organization.
It's good news for Miami that the Penn State product has put up better numbers every season in the league. He has increased his reception and receiving yards every year since he was a second-round pick.
Gesicki appeared in 64 of 65 games in his first four seasons.
He became Miami's second option behind Jaylen Waddle during the 2021 campaign thanks to his combination of athletic ability and physical strength. He has been more than just a safety outlet.
Gesicki is just 26 years old and will continue on his upward trajectory with more experience.
The Dolphins will be better on offense as a result of this move.
