It was possible to order free at- home coronaviruses test kits in January of 2022. Each household could only order four test kits. You can now order a second set of tests for those who appreciated access to them.

The United States Postal Service can now deliver free coronaviruses test kits for a second time to households in the country.

  • You’re limited to a total of two orders per residential address (so if you already ordered one kit, you can now order a second kit)
  • The order includes four individual rapid antigen COVID-19 tests
  • Orders will ship as soon as available from manufacturers (the first time around I received them within two weeks)

The process of requesting a free test kit is very easy, you just have to provide your email address and shipping address, and no payment is required. I requested another kit for our household in less than a minute.

Can free coronavirus test kits be used for travel?

If you are going to the United States for international travel, you need to get a rapid antigen test within one calendar day. There are test kits that are self-administered that you can buy, but you have to be supervised while taking the test. These tests don't have that option.

Being able to have spare rapid antigen tests is very useful. It is always helpful to be able to verify whether you have coronaviruses or not, given the potential impact on your health, the health of others, and travel plans. It is helpful to be able to test again after returning from a trip, especially for people who have vulnerable people in their lives.

Bottom line

It was possible to order free rapid antigen test kits in late January, though each household was limited to four. For a total of eight tests per household, it is now possible to order an additional four. This could still be useful, since the United States is looking a lot better than it did in January.
