Gordon Lee managed Port Vale before moving on to Everton later in his career

Gordon Lee was the former manager ofEverton.

Lee was in charge of the side from 1977 to 1981 and took them to a League Cup final, two FA Cup semi-finals and two top-four finishes in the First Division.

The former player was also the manager of two other teams.

Kevin Ratcliffe, who was handed his debut by Lee, told the club's website that Gordon loved to give young players an opportunity.

I will always be grateful that he gave me mine.

He was ahead of his time with some of his coaching methods and with a bit more luck would have brought honours to the club. He left a mark on the team and his passing is very sad.

Lee was a defender for 11 years at Villa before moving to Shrewsbury.

They said they were deeply sad by his death, and that their thoughts were with his loved ones.

Gordon was a big part of my development and I always enjoyed meeting up with him later in life.

I extend my sympathies to his family.
