A person familiar with the matter told CNBC that the U.S. will ban imports of Russian oil on Tuesday.

The Department of Energy did not respond to requests for comment. The White House updated President Joe Biden's schedule on Tuesday to include an announcement of new U.S. actions intended to hold Russia accountable.

Biden will speak from the White House at 10:45 a.m. The schedule said that it would be at 10 am.

According to the Energy Information Administration, the U.S. imports about 672,000 barrels of oil a day from Russia, which is more than any of its European allies.
