After burning through part of the population in January, South Dakota's COVID-19 pandemic returned to levels not seen since August.

When the omicron variant arrived in December, the delta variant was still active. After omicron took the state's pandemic to heights not previously seen, it was in rapid decline by the end of January.

During the past seven days, the state has averaged 70 new positive coronaviruses cases a day, the lowest since August. South Dakota had a few cases after the first big wave in the fall of 2020.

The decline in the first big wave took months, but in the latest wave it only took a few weeks.

27% of the state's population has tested positive for COVID-19, but the real number is likely much higher. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 81% of the state's eligible population has had at least one dose of the vaccine. The numbers show that a lot of the state has developed immunity to the disease.

According to the CDC, the Dakotas, Wyoming and Nebraska have had the lowest number of new COVID-19 cases in the country. Regional patterns have been shown to be behind the COVID-19 outbreaks and remissions.

There were 3,754 active COVID-19 cases in the state by Friday, the lowest since August. The hospital's occupied beds had fallen to 127, the lowest since August.

The South Dakota Health Department has reported the lowest number of COVID-19 hospitalizations since August.

South Dakota has averaged four deaths per day over the past week. The number should decrease.

The latest mortality report from the South Dakota Department of Health shows that in 2021, there were more deaths than any other year in the state's history. Of the 9,173 South Dakotans who died in 2021, 776 were claimed by COVID-19. In 2020, COVID-19 accounted for 1,497 deaths.

The state had an average of 7,659 deaths per year in the nine years prior to COVID-19.

The data shows that deaths will be closer to the average than they were in the last two years if there is a new coronaviruses variant.

South Dakota is among the lowest states for new COVID-19 cases.
