The ancestors of orcas and false killer whales seem to have eaten small fish, which suggests they adapted to hunt larger prey.
Giovanni Bianucci at the University of Pisa, Italy, says that this is an extraordinary fossil that helps qualify the origin of the unique diet of killer whales and false killer whales.
The only living species of cetaceans that feed on other marine mammals are Orcas and false killer whales. Cetacean fossils are rare, so it's unclear when they evolved to do so.
