The website where you can place your order is covidtests.gov. Every household can place a second order of free tests starting this week according to a notice on that website.

This means that if you already got yours, you can order again, but it also means that if you never got around to ordering them in the first place, you can now request two orders at once for a total of eight tests.

This does not mean boxes of tests. A double pack contains many over-the-counter, at- home tests. A positive result is pretty reliable, but a negative result may mean that you don't have enough virus in your nose or that you didn't get enough snot on the sample. If you test negative, you have to repeat the test the next day to be sure.

When the website first went live, I received a box containing four tests, total, from the company. You may get a different brand this time, or a different brand than your neighbor, because the government has bought tests from a variety of manufacturers. The promised tests showed up.

Other ways to order

If you want to pass on the information to a less technologically inclined loved one, you can call the hotline. English and Spanish are some of the languages where help is available.

There is a special channel for people with disabilities. The Disability Information and Access Line is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can email DIAL@usaginganddisability.org. The CDC page has all the information on requesting and using at- home tests.
