The defense intelligence agency of Ukraine said Monday that its country's forces had killed Russian Army Major General Gerasimov and that other senior Russian Army officers were also killed or wounded.

The intelligence agency identified Gerasimov as the first deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army.

He was involved in the second Chechen war and Russian military actions in Syria.

The agency claimed that there were problems with communication in the army of Russia.

The post contains audio files that are said to be from intercepts of communications between Russians about Gerasimov's death.

Bellingcat reported that the phone number of the person receiving the call was linked to the phone by open-source data, and that it was a senior officer in Russia's national security agency.

The deputy commander of the 41st Combined was shot and killed by a Ukrainian. The 7th Airborne Division was commanded by Sukhovetsky.

Russian President Putin confirmed the death of a person.
