The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church referred to the war in Ukraine as a struggle against a godless international order in his sermon on Sunday.

The war broke out after eight years of attempts to destroy what exists in the Donbas, because the pro-Russian republics embodied a fundamental rejection of the so-called values.

Kirill said that this world order offers excessive consumption and freedom to any nation that holds a gay parade.

In 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a ban on gay propaganda, which included pride parades and exposing children to information about homosexuality. Gay sex is not criminalized in Russia.

While portraying Russia as the guardian of Christian values that constitute the basis of Western civilization, Putin often accuses the West of denying moral principles.

Around six percent of Russians go to church regularly. Russia has the highest abortion rate in the world.

Kirill, a strong supporter of Putin, urged his flock on Sunday not to put up with those who promote sin, specifically homosexuality.

He said that Orthodox Christians who oppose the war follow the path that the powers show them.

Orthodox Christians prepare for the penitential season of Lent and ask forgiveness of one another on Forgiveness Sunday.
