Kyle Van Noy was released by the team on Monday.
The move creates about $4.1 million in salary-cap space, nearly doubling the total cap space for the team.
Van Noy was scheduled to count $7.3 million against the team&s cap, which was the ninth-highest figure among players.
Van Noy signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the Pats in March 2021. It was his second stint with the franchise after he was part of two Super Bowl championship teams from 2016 to 2019.
Van Noy played in 16 regular-season games in New England last season, totaling 66 tackles to rank fourth on the team. He had five sacks, 10 passes defended, and a touchdown return for a touchdown, as well as a forced fumbled and intercept.
Van Noy was able to play both on and off the line of scrimmage in the multiple scheme. The defense failed to force a punt in the playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills.
He said in an interview on WEEI on March 2 that there were a lot of decisions to be made. I'm under contract for one more year, but you never know.
