The second day of an investigation into a Friday morning incident that left two people dead and nine Phoenix Police Department officers injured was Saturday. Police on Friday identified Morris Jones as the suspect who they say fatally shot his former girlfriend before injuring officers at the scene near 51st Avenue and Broadway Road. On Saturday, the woman was identified as 29-year-old Shatifah. It was not clear what led to the shooting as of Saturday morning. The wounded officers have not been identified. The officials described the case as incredibly complex and said that information is subject to change as the investigation continues. There is a graphic warning in the video where 9 officers are wounded while saving a baby. Phoenix police have a dangerous job, officer shortages and investigations. The injuries to the nine officers could be the most to occur in a single incident at the department, according to Sgt. Andy Williams. Williams said in the news release that Phoenix police responded to the home after a caller reported that a woman had been shot and that there were multiple armed suspects inside. Jones invited the first arriving officer inside and then shot him with a handgun as he approached, according to Williams. The officer was able to escape. Jones went back inside after a second officer returned fire. Jones fired more shots at police as they staged outside the residence. Jones tried to flee by ramming a patrol car that was blocking his escape, but was unsuccessful and went back inside the garage, Williams said. Williams said that a man from inside the home came out holding a baby girl in one arm with his other arm raised in the air. He followed police orders to place the baby on the ground and walk backwards towards them. The baby is a shared child between Jones and Lobley and the man is believed to be their brother. Four police officers were shot as they tried to save a baby. Four of them were injured by bullets. The officers took cover. Jones fired shots at police and an officer returned fire. The baby was saved by a team of police officers who used shields to protect him. Police said Jones fired shots at them. Williams said that the officers tried to get Jones to come outside and use a camera to look inside, but he was not moving. Jones was dead and Lobley was critically injured when officers entered the home. She died of her injuries at the hospital on Friday. Police later said that he had been found dead inside the home. The baby girl was taken away from her by the Arizona Department of Child Safety. Three officers remained in the hospital as of Saturday afternoon, while the others were treated and released. Police said the hospitalized officers were in good spirits. The incident was condemned by the mayor and other city leaders at a Friday news conference.
