A group of teenage boys and a cook at a nearby restaurant helped bring injured children to safety after a car crash into a day-care center.

Boe Howsmon of Becca's Cafe said that a woman crashed her Suzuki SUV through a brick wall at a daycare center. Thursday.

The building at the corner of Balls Ferry Road and Martha Street has 19 children and two teachers inside. Five of the injured children were taken to the hospital by their parents, while 14 other children and one adult were taken to hospitals by ambulance, according to Anderson Police Chief Jon Poletski.

Two of the children were taken to UC Davis Medical Center.

The Anderson Police Department said police officers, firefighters and medical personnel arrived at the preschool within 2 minutes.

Howsmon said he and a half-dozen teenagers jumped into action after the crash.

Howsmon said Friday that he did what any dad would do.

He said Eric was sitting out back when he heard a loud bang after seeing the car go into the building.

Howsmon ran over there and saw some teenage boys running inside.

He said that a group of boys were playing basketball at the teen center and were almost hit by an SUV.

The teenage boys jumped in and started pulling the kids out.

Howsmon wrote the names of the teens down to the center's owner.

There was a little girl trapped under the car and another one in front of it.

The two teachers were helping with the children.

Everybody was confused. The kids were confused. They did not know what was happening. I believe that napping at the time might have saved their lives. They were not standing in front of the wall.

Everyone had to be careful because it looked like the brick wall might fall over. He said the driver stopped at one point, but the rescuers yelled at her to stop.

The first responders took over once they arrived on the scene, according to Howsmon.

Howsmon said one of the center's teachers came to Becca's on Friday to thank him and give him a hug.

The driver of the SUV was an Anderson woman. Police said she was determined not to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. She was released after giving a statement.

Anderson police didn't release any more information as of Saturday afternoon.

The investigation into the cause of the collision and the moments preceding the collision is ongoing, according to the press release.

The conditions of the two children sent to UC Davis Medical Center are not available.

The UC Davis Public Affairs Office does not provide patient conditions.

UC Davis said that a patient's condition will not be given unless they specifically request their condition be shared.
