Since the 90s, cosplaying has been a booming hobby. It began in Japan and has traveled around the world.

Cosplaying is a combination of the words "costume" and "role-play" and is mostly seen at comic book and sci-fi conventions, but in recent years with the popularity of YouTube and TikTok, cosplayers of all kinds have emerged.

Hannah Riann's passion for the craft was born out of her love for A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Riann was introduced to the horror film by her mother. Riann wore her first costume as a female Freddy to attend the convention with her mother.

Ten years ago, Riann was encouraged to pursue the hobby by positive reactions from other convention goers, and now she is getting her degree in costume design and works as an alterations specialist at David's Bridal.

I would love to make screen-accurate costumes for people, just because I do that all the time for myself.

Riann credits her little sister with helping her learn to sew, but her mom made most of her costumes before that. Riann would stick to simpler cosplays that she could throw together with finds from thrift stores and a lot of hot glue.

She is able to sew intricate designs and piece together epic props to emulate her favorite characters, like Pyramid Head from the Silent Hill video game franchise.

Can local filmmakers save the movie industry? The Louisiana man is all in.

Riann begins her process by choosing a character that is well-known and popular to get the most attention at cons. The research includes analyzing the character and its costume from every angle, as well as rendering the look with notes on fabrics and potential materials.

She says doing the research on characters and exactly what they wear is fun, and getting to bring that to life is the best.

Buying materials, sewing, and trying out any issues like fit and need to see out of elaborate headpieces are all part of the process. Riann begins to think about and start costumes for specific cons a year in advance to allow enough time to get them done and allow for mistakes.

Riann says anyone can cosplay, no matter their race, gender or size. I try to be as kind as possible.
