A veteran sheriff's sergeant is home with a bullet in his arm, and three teenagers are in jail after a gunfight that wounded two suspects, city leaders said during a news conference Sunday.

Sheriff Greg Countryman said that Sgt. Jeremy Hattaway shot back at the three teens after they opened fire on him. The sheriff said that when he cornered the suspects, they started shooting.

Countryman said that he said that he saw guns coming out of the windows.

The sheriff said Hattaway struck one suspect three times. The wounded suspect got out with the one who was unharmed and ran, but Columbus police caught both of them, according to police Chief Freddie Blackmon, who was at the news conference along with Mayor Skip Henderson.

Hattaway was allowed to go home after he was treated at the hospital.

The sheriff gave a list of the suspects who were 17 years old.

Thompson used a gun to commit a crime, car theft, and obstruction of police.

Hamilton was convicted of being a felon with a firearm and used a gun to commit a crime.

There are a number of charges againstVincente Perez-Lopez, including assault on a police officer, using a gun to commit a crime, theft by receiving stolen property, and obstructing police.

Two of the three were wounded.

Some details of Saturday's events were unclear, but Countryman and Blackmon told reporters it began when the owner of the stolen Ford Focus called for help.

Blackmon said police officers maneuvered through traffic to catch up with the car before it sped away.

Countryman said that Hattaway was gassing up his vehicle at the city pumps on Cusseta Road when he heard a broadcast of the Ford's description and went looking for it.

The Ford was pursued by Hattaway in the area of Victory Drive. Multiple shots were fired at Hattaway's vehicle after the Focus sideswiped the Tahoe.

Countryman said there was a shooting and a pursuit. It was not clear where police first saw the Focus, though an earlier news release said officers followed it through downtown and into south Columbus.

The mayor and two law enforcement leaders said Sunday that too many young people in Columbus are getting guns stolen from automobiles that owners have left them in. Henderson urged residents to keep their guns in their homes.

Countryman and Blackmon said they will work together to fight gun violence. Hattaway, who has been with the sheriff's office at least 20 years, is the agency's gang expert, but city leaders could not say whether the shooting was gang related.

The criminal investigation of Hattaway will be handled by his staff, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will be asked to review the shooting of the two suspects.
