There is still some room for speeding up the browser even after the launch of version 100 of the browser. The Speedometer benchmark, which was originally developed by Apple's WebKit team, was scored 300 points by version 99 of Chrome on macOS. This is the fastest performance of any browser so far.
Speedometer 2.0 is a good proxy for user experience. It has been a while since the browser market focused on speed, since most vendors bet on the same Chromium codebase to build their browsers. The various development teams are still thinking about how to speed up the user experience. We are not seeing major breakthrough technologies these days. The rivalry between the different vendors isn't over even as they are getting together to align their browsers with web standards.
There is always room for improvement when a new chip comes along. After 15 months after the launch of Arm-based chips, Chrome runs 43% faster than it did before, and the graphics performance of the browser is now better than it was before. That is on top of a number of general JavaScript optimizations that were announced last year.
There is no news for Windows users today, but there will be improvements for Chrome on the other platform. The company says that it has improved the loading of a page by 15%.
Are you going to notice this? A modern browser on a fast connection renders a page in a blink of an eye. It doesn't take much to make software feel more responsive, so the 43% on M1 Macs will surely make you feel more productive.
