Russian shelling hits fleeing civilians in Irpin, Ukraine

The New York Times reported that a group of Ukrainians were trying to flee Irpin after Russian forces advanced there.

The civilians were split up in groups and were trying to cross a destroyed bridge when the shelling started.

The Times reported that they were a woman, her teenage son, her daughter, and a family friend. The daughter appeared to be young.

The photo of the Ukrainian troops rushing to help the family was featured on the Monday front page of the Times.

The woman and children were dead when soldiers rushed to help, according to a photographer who was on the scene. A man with them still had a pulse, but he was badly wounded. He died later.

The luggage, a blue roller suitcase, and some backpacks were scattered about, along with a green carrying case for a small dog that was barking.

A total of eight people, including a family, died in the attack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack in a Sunday night video message. To escape. The entire family. How many families have died in the country? We won't forgive. We will not forget.

He said that they would punish everyone who committed atrocities in the war.

Russian forces started pushing through the town of Irpin over the weekend, forcing around 2,000 people to flee, police said Monday.

The towns of Irpin, Hostomel, and Bucha were being targeted by Russians.

Russia invaded Ukraine on the 12th day. Russian President Putin said he wouldn't target civilians.

Sky News reported that more than 1,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed between February 24 and March 4.
