  • The Power of the Dog was criticized by Sam Elliott.

  • The film's "allusions of homosexuality" was critiqued by Elliott on the show.

  • I'm trying very hard not to say anything about the reaction.

The Power of the Dog was criticized by Sam Elliott.

Jane Campion's Oscar-nominated movie was described as a piece of shit by a veteran Western actor.

He compared the cowboy characters, played by Cumberbatch and Smit-McPhee, to dancers who wear bow ties and not much else.

He said that all the cowboys in the movie looked like that. There are allusions to homosexuality throughout the movie. Where is the Western in this Western?

Jane Campion is a brilliant director, but what does this woman from New Zealand know about the American West?

During a BAFTA Film Session event on Friday, Cumberbatch spoke about the criticism.

He said that he was trying not to say anything about the reaction on the radio show.

Without meaning to stir over the ashes of that, someone really took offence to the way the West was portrayed.

He referred to his emotionally repressed, gay character, Phil Burbank.

Whether it's on our doorstep or down the road or someone we meet in a bar or pub or on the sports field, there is aggression and anger and an inability to control or know who you are.

There is no harm in looking at a character to get to the root causes of that.

This is a very specific case of oppression, but also due to the fact that Phil is not able to fully be himself.
