The United Launch Alliance shared a video of the Atlas V rocket carrying the weather satellite into space.
On Tuesday, March 1, the Atlas V rocket was launched. The beautifully shot video includes footage of the build-up to launch as well as the launch itself and features several time-lapse sequences and other eye-catching imagery.
The new 6,000-pound GOES-18 satellite was launched by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration in February.
The launch of GOES-T last week was praised by the administrator of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
The network of satellites helps predict and monitor extreme weather events such as storms, tornadoes, and hurricanes. They can follow the progression of environmental hazard such as wildfires and volcanic eruptions.
For at least the next 15 years, the GOES-18 will keep watch over the U.S. West Coast, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Central America, and the Pacific Ocean.
The Atlas V is a workhorse for ULA. The 92nd and 22nd missions in partnership with NASA's Launch Services Program were launched by the vehicle in the past week.
