The war in Russia has led to the suspension of the service in the country. Several companies have stopped their Russian operations over the past few days.
All of the upcoming Russian series were put on hold as well as any acquisitions from Russia. Four upcoming series were impacted by this stop in production. Under Russian law, state-owned channels must be offered on the platform of a service.
The company is pausing its streaming services in Russia indefinitely.
We have decided to suspend our service in Russia because of the situation on the ground, a spokesman for the company said.
The impact of this withdrawal on the bottom line is likely to be small. According to The Wall Street Journal, less than one million users are found in the Russian market. Statista reports that at the end of last year, there were 191,000 Russian subscribers of the streaming service.
It is a drop in the bucket compared to the global subscriptions of the company. Approximately 75 million of the 222 million subscriptions are in the U.S. and Canada.
As the international community continues to condemn the invasion of Ukraine, the withdrawal from Russia is a significant symbolic message. Russian civilians have turned out in large numbers to protest the war.
