The Spartans were up by 20 points at the half. The Terrapins were down by three points midway through the second half. Strong performances from Tyson Walker and Marcus Bingham Jr. helped seal the victory.
It was the first win for the Spartans since they beat the then-No. 1 team. Izzo and Knight tied their records on Feb. 26. They finished the regular season with a 20-11 record and will face Maryland in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament.
Izzo has been head coach of the Spartans since 1995 and has a 663-265 record. He has led Michigan State to many appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
In addition, Izzo is a three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, two-time NABC Coach of the Year and one-time AP Coach of the Year.
Knight is considered an icon in college basketball. He coached at Indiana from 1971 to 2000 and still holds the record for Big Ten wins. Izzo has a good record against Big Ten teams.
Knight made five Final Four appearances.
