I got my first cat when I was seven years old and I had a crush on the actor who played Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The family computer room was a mess of dial-up and massive machines at that time. I lied about my age and became a moderator on an online community of cat owners because I read a pamphlet included in the kitty litter my mom bought.

I wouldn't recommend that specific message board, but there are more reliable sites online for cat owners to learn about their pet's health and happiness and shop around for stimulating toys and cute little hats.

If you are worried about the health of your cat, you should go beyond the internet. It could be run by a seven year old with too much time on her hands. Give your doctor a call.

1. Reddit

When my cat starts acting differently in any way, you can find me searching for the problem on the internet, followed by the term "Reddit" (he doesn't feel threatened as the alpha in my home). When you need to know what to do after catching your cat eating something he shouldn't, or pulling them off of a stray cat, there are boards like r/AskVet.

The goal of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is to prevent animal abuse. If your house cat doesn't need to be rescued, but you want to help animals in need and post pets for adoption, the ASPCA site has a lot of helpful tips and resources.

6. PetMD

PetMD is a place to go for information on animals. It is a great resource for pet health and care. If you constantly check for symptoms for your pet, you could end up believing they are always sick, when in reality, they may just be having an off day. If you have specific concerns about your cat, call your vet.

7. Little Big Cat

The site was created by Dr. Jean Hofve and Jackson Galaxy from the TV show, My Cat from Hell. Little Big Cat is all about helping people care for their cats so they won't give them up for adoption or become strays. Here, you can find everything from health and nutrition advice to behavior tips.

Cat-World is a website about cats. There are a lot of care topics on this site, from the best products to buy when introducing a new cat to your family, to what to expect behaviorally from your feline. It also has breed profiles, which is very helpful to understand your cat, because so many of us have no idea what kind of cat we have.
