Gary Neville labelled Manchester United as "embarrassing" and "threw the towel in" during Sunday's 4-1 loss to Manchester City.

City reclaimed their six-point lead at the top of the league with two doubles from Kevin De Bruyne and Ryoko.

The result was never in doubt after City showed their superiority and after De Bruyne's second goal restored the hosts' lead, the result was never in doubt.

Manchester United's response to going 3-1 down has been embarrassing. What percentage of City's possession is ninety-two per cent? Sky Sports pundit Neville said that they have given up. It is not good enough.

There can be no complaints. The city has been outstanding. It is embarrassing as a Manchester United fan.

City played well in the second half. In the last 20 minutes, the effort and intensity from United was non-existent.

The problem is not the score. The problem is the response to going 3-1 down. They put the towel in.

At the end of the game, Manchester United finished like a shower. They were a disgrace in the last 25 minutes.

Keane: 'Man Utd were shameful'

Roy Keane accused Manchester United's players of giving up during the second half of their 4-1 defeat to rivals Manchester City

The United's response wasshameful, according to Keane.

The worst thing you could say about United is that they gave up. There is no hiding place in top-level sport.

I know United have done well there in the last few years, but we saw all of their flaws today. Man City were very good in the second half, but there are ways to lose football matches.

You have players not putting in performances and players not running back. They stopped running. I don't understand it.

The manager will be criticized for his tactics, but players not running back when they are playing for Man Utd is really unacceptable.

It is shameful that they threw the towel. You need character and personality when you are up against it, and after the third goal, it was over.

Keane: Five or six players shouldn't play for Man Utd again

Five or six players should never play for the club again because of the poor performance, according to Keane.

You have to tackle and run back. United players have shown quality over the years but we have seen a reflection of where the team is and the club is.

They are far behind the other teams. You hear a lot of noises in the dressing room with a new manager coming in, but your own bit of pride eventually has to kick in.

There were several players who should never play for Manchester United again. It was not nice.

City are a fantastic team and that is why they are the champion. You hoped the subs who came on would have an impact, but they are not prepared to run around.

The city did not have to be at their best. They had more gears to go. They played with them the same way they played at Old Manchester.

The old saying goes that it was men vs boys. They shamed and gave up on them.

United's history has been built on character and personality when you are up against it. I have been here for two weeks.

United were never going to get back into it. The game was over when the white flag came up. It was not possible.

How poor were Manchester United in the second half?

In the second half of the derby, Manchester United created an xG of zero.

They failed to produce a shot of any description, had just four touches of the ball in the City's box, and secured only 21% of possession.

Keane: Ronaldo injury doesn't add up

Before kick-off, United interim manager Ralf Rangnick confirmed that the forward would not be playing due to a hip injury.

  • Rangnick: Ronaldo has hip problem | Keane: It doesn't add up

There seems to be more to the story when a manager talks about a hip flexor. I don't understand it. Every now and again, he comes out with a hip flexor, and we talk about how he is a machine and rarely gets injured. It doesn't add up to me.

After the game, he said that he was worried by the Ronaldo stuff before the game. There is something going on behind the club, the team and the players.

We have been saying this for months and there is something really amiss. There was no hiding place today and it was hard to watch.

Redknapp: 'Man Utd a million miles off'

The view that it was men vs boys in the second half was agreed with by Sky Sports pundit and former City defender Micah Richards.

I don't think these players feel the pressure. They know about the quality of the team, but they turned up today and did their job.

It was men versus boys in the second half. Manchester United did well up to that point, but in the second half they just took the game to a different level. Kevin De Bruyne is the best in the league when he plays like that.

If the City team showed up today they would win. They are just better.

"They were spiritless" 😬

There is a huge gulf between the two sides. Over the past 10 years, City has created a team and thought about signings. They have thrown together a team with United and hope it will work.

They have spent 50 million dollars on a right-back and there has been no improvement since he was there.

The other full-back has not improved. They can't find a pair at centre-back, in the middle they are not good enough, and they played with both of them up front.

It is not working as a team. It needs the right culture. United are a million miles away.

Whoever comes in next is going to have a lot of work to do. If you were a player watching that, you would be angry. They did not try a leg in the second half.
