As Germany reexamines its relationship with its armed forces, leaders from across the political divide in Berlin have called for compulsory service to be reintroduced.

The deputy leader of the conservatives said on Sunday that compulsory service would help bring people together.

The debate includes influential voices from the governing centre- left SPD, which is calling for a return of compulsory military service for men and women over the age of 18.

Mr Linnemann told ZDF that peace is not a law of nature. He said that compulsory service would counteract polarisation in society.

All adult German men were expected to perform a year of compulsory military service, although they could opt for service in civil society based on moral grounds.

When the law was passed to suspend national service, it was clear that it could be lifted in times of war or international tension.

There have been calls for compulsory service in the past. In the wake of the conflict in Ukraine, calls for a debate on the issue have grown.

Conscription 'needs social consensus'

A chance to find more recruits is what the deputy leader of the Bundestag said. He suggested it could be linked to gaining points in a pension system.

Wolfgang Hellmich, the defence spokesman in the Bundestag, told a local newspaper last week that compulsory service helps to promote a sense of community.

We need to hold the debate as it needs social consensus.

At a time when the Bundeswehr needs to focus its energy on modernising its outdated equipment, the proposal is a distraction.

We need technology and weapons systems, not brains, according to the defence spokesman for the CDU. At this point in time, scription is not an issue.

The proposal is a theoretical discussion that isn't helpful in the current situation.

Germany to increase defence spending

The Bundeswehr has been plagued by damaging headlines about malfunctioning helicopter and assault rifles.

A report published in January found that only 77 percent of the German armed forces were ready to operate.

The war in Ukraine has brought the German armed forces into dramatic relief and led to a dramatic pivot, with the German chancellor announcing a 100 billion dollar fund to bring the Bundeswehr back into fighting shape.

Germany has resisted the Nato commitment to spend 2% of GDP on defence. Spending will now rise above the two per cent target.

Christian Lindner, the finance minister who is also a reserve officer, has promised to turn the Germany army into the most effective in Europe.
