I keep practicing the skill of dining solo.Rachel Askinasi/Insider
  • Over the past decade, I have had a lot of solo meals.

  • It is a skill that requires a lot of practice.

  • I think these seven tips can help anyone get more comfortable dining alone.

I have eaten alone at restaurants a lot for my job over the past two years, but it is something I have done since college. When I am asked about a solo meal, I am always met with a reaction of "Oh my gosh, I could never do that" or "I wish I could do that."

I have realized that it is a skill. It is a skill that anyone can improve if they are willing to put in the work and feel uncomfortable along the way.

Some of the things I have learned help me get to a place where I enjoy going alone.

Solo dining isn't just for single people who don't have local friends

Pack your bags and kick that idea out the door if you hold it in your head.

I have eaten alone while single, in a relationship and with friends, and I have been offered other plans with my friends. Sometimes I need to take myself out and be reminded that I can do things.

And guess what? If you don't feel like you have people to socialize with, dining alone is fine. It is a great way to meet people. Maybe you are making new friends after moving somewhere new. If that is you, good luck! There are other tips for a different skill to learn.

Don't be so hard on yourself

It can feel taxing to do things on your own if you are not into it, in a world where everything revolves around showing off what you are doing and who you are with. It is okay to be awkward, to push yourself, and to try to be more independent.

Try to keep the negative self-talk to a minimum, you are all welcome to relaying the advice I paid for. It is perfectly fine if you are mid-meal and self-conscious. Sit with the feeling, acknowledge it, and then do something to move on. Sometimes just changing my actions can change the way I feel.

If you were learning to play an instrument, you would cut yourself a lot of slack. You need the same amount of practice and self-forgiveness to teach yourself a new skill.

No one is looking at you as much as you feel like they are

When I first went out alone, I thought people were staring at me. Sorry to break it to you, but no one cares. Most people think about themselves, their meal, their conversation, or anything else that isn't you.

If you feel like you are in a bad dream where you are standing at the head of the class in your underwear, I would recommend taking a look around. If you notice how many people are looking back at you, do a full turn if that makes you feel comfortable.

Start small: Sit at the bar or even just in public

Being comfortable alone in public is an important stepping stone. I would recommend starting there if you are not happy grabbing a coffee and a bagel and sitting on a bench alone.

If you want to go to the restaurants, you should go to the bar. Most of the time, I sit at the bar when I grab a drink alone. I can chat with the bartender, people-watch from my elevated bar stool, and maybe even make a new friend with someone else dining alone.

Bar or counter seating eliminates the empty chair across from you and is a great way to avoid the question from the server: Are you waiting for anyone?

Feel free to bring a prop

I find it hard to read in my home, so I like to go out on my own. The newspaper, a magazine, a book, or anything of the sort is what you should bring. You can bring a notebook to sketch. Whatever it is, bring something that helps you settle in.

I don't like listening to music or a show while I take myself out because I feel like it closes me off from the rest of the space. I go out at the end of the day to be a part of the action.

I bet you have your phone handy if you are really in a bind. It is possible to make you forget other people are around while you are out by scrolling through social media.

Then, try ditching the prop once you've gotten comfortable

Leave that book in your bag once you have it in your hand. Start to wean yourself off of that safety blanket again.

People-watching is my favorite prop replacement. I like grabbing a table and watching people. The best fashion show is on the street, according to Bill Cunningham, a photographer and columnist for The New York Times.

Like almost anything, it gets easier and more enjoyable with practice

It can be intimidating in the beginning, but once you get used to it, it can be a really great thing to do. It has allowed me to feed myself whenever and wherever I want. I know that sounds crazy, but not everyone is comfortable just going to a restaurant and eating.

It has helped me in other situations where I am alone. When a friend or date goes to the restroom and I am left at the table, I don't feel the need to use my phone. It is a tool I have available when I am traveling somewhere new and it is important to include that safety is the first priority and I am well aware of where I am while in a new place alone. I am more willing to sit and enjoy my surroundings on a nice day than I was before I started practicing this ability to be alone.

If you can, treat yourself to the experience just because you are by yourself. There are many reasons to not go out to eat, like cooking for the sake of health, or the amount of money it costs to dine out. You should not be on that list.
