The San Francisco 49ers are said to be hiring Brian Griese as their quarterbacks coach.

Kyle Shanahan was on the coaching staff of the 49ers when Griese was a quarterback.

Griese was selected in the third round of the 1998 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. He played for the Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, and the Buccaneers.

In 93 career games, he went 45-38, completing 60.7 percent of his passes for 19,440 yards and 119 touchdown against 99 picks.

Griese was a member of the franchise in 2008 and played from 2004 to 2005. Before joining the Houston Texans as a wide receiver coach in 2006 he was an offensive quality control coach for the Buccaneers from 2004 to 2005.

Griese will play a significant role in the development of the third overall pick in the 2020 draft, who is expected to take over as San Francisco's starting quarterback next season. Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be traded.

Lance played in six games for the 49ers in 2021. He completed 57.7% of his passes for 603 yards and five touchdown against two picks and ran for 168 yards and a score.

Griese's approach to coaching Lance should be interesting to watch. Rich Scangarello took a new job at the University of Kentucky.

Troy Aikman was hired by the company to be in the booth for Monday Night Football, and that doesn't come as a surprise.
