The third-largest live TV streaming service in the United States with nearly 2.5 million paid subscribers has dropped the Russia Today channel. The same goes for the satellite arm of the media carrier. As of Wednesday, March 2, it was still being streamed on Sling TV, but it was not clear when it became unavailable. The channel was not on as of the afternoon of March 4.
CNN reported on Thursday that the news channel ceased production and laid off most of its staff, effectively spelling the end of the channel. That makes dropping the channel meaningless.
After the military invasion of Ukraine by the Russian government in the last week of February, many companies have decided to stop doing business with the Russian government. The channel was dropped earlier in the week by Roku and also by DirecTV, which also has satellite and streaming operations.
Russia state-affiliated channel,RT America, made no bones about its affiliations on the now-unlisted Roku channel.
It's not clear how many subscribers were on Sling TV. It wasn't part of either of the base plans and was only available as a $6-a-month add-on to the Sling News Extra package.
