According to USA TODAY, the most anti-gay legislation in state-level political history could happen in 2022. There are bills to restrict the rights of the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community.

In January, Chasten Buttigieg, husband of Pete Buttigieg, excoriated Florida lawmakers for their own version of the gay bill.

The movement advancement project gave Tennessee a negative six out of a possible four points for their LGBTQ policy scorecard, but this hasn't stopped state politicians from adopting further restrictions.

The sponsors of one particular bill rely on a false dichotomy about the LGBTQ and religious people that mischaracterizes them as mutually exclusive groups, a claim that my own research refutes.

The bill states that the promotion of LGBT issues and lifestyles in public schools offends a significant portion of students, parents and Tennessee residents with Christian values.

Social scientific research does not support the idea that the LGBTQ people are not religious.

According to the Cooperative Congressional Election Study (CCES), one of the largest datasets of LGBTQ survey respondents in the United States, more than one in 10 people consider themselves to be Christian. According to the survey, more than half of the people in the United States identify with a faith tradition. The number is closer to two-thirds according to some surveys.

There are more people of faith for the LGBTQ community than politicians think. According to the Public Religion Research Institute's (PRRI) 2020 American Values Atlas, 77% of Tennesseans support laws that protect the LGBTQ community from discrimination.

According to a recent study, 37% of white evangelical Protestants in the United States are comfortable with having trans teachers in their local elementary school. The number is higher among non-Evangelical Christians.

The social science shows that most Christians are not offended by LGBTQ people. The science shows that anti-LGBTQ policy contributes to poor mental and physical health outcomes among young people by focusing the prejudices of a few politicians on vulnerable children.

State legislators should stop using religion to justify their policies. The science shows their harm.

Tennessee wants to cause harm by adding more anti-gay legislation.
