A huge explosion at a Maryland apartment building on Thursday seriously injured three people and sent another 11 people to the hospital, according to local officials.

The explosion reduced a building in the 2400 block of Lyttonsville Road in Silver Spring, Montgomery County, to rubble and led to a fire that saw around 150 firefighters called out.

It was described as a catastrophic event where the building exploded and collapsed.

John Bell, a nearby resident whose home was undamaged, told WTOP that the explosion felt like an earthquake.

No one was killed in the blast. All residents were accounted for as of Friday, but officials were still trying to determine if there were any visitors at the time of the blast.

Local news organizations and neighbors shared footage of the fire.

The cause of the explosion is not known. WTOP reported that Elrich said there were reasons to believe there may have been a human error.

The worker is giving information to investigators. He said that the explosion was linked to maintenance work at the building.

Elrich said that the building had a fire inspection on February 2 and a full triannual building inspection last October.

A lot of people were evacuated on Thursday. Six buildings were without power on Friday because of the damage to the transformer.

The government of Montgomery County is raising money for those affected by the disaster.
