Danny Syring, center, celebrates his second double eagle of his round last Sunday with his father Kevin, left, and Jay Green of La Quinta, right.

A score of 3-under par on a golf hole is close to the game, something few golfers ever come close to achieving.

It was true of Danny until last Sunday. That was the time when Syring made two double eagles in the same round at the PGA West in La Quinta.

If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't believe it.

Kevin, a PGA professional from New Jersey, and friends Jay and Renate Green of La Quinta, along with their son, made a 2 on the par-5 11th hole of the Nicklaus Tournament Course. On the par-5 15th hole with its island green, Syring holed a 5-iron from 205 yards.

The elder Syring, a 40-year PGA professional and head pro at Deer Run Golf and Tennis Club in Lincoln, Park, N.J., said that it almost sounds like a fish story.

Jay Green said that he wouldn't be telling the story unless he witnessed it. I have been playing golf for 63 years. I have never seen a double eagle.

According to Michael Christensen of the website doubleeagleclub.org, there are only three instances of a player making two holes in one in the same round. The first was in 1964 and the second in 2015, and both previous times the golfer made two holes in one on short par-4s.

The odds of making a single double eagle are difficult to determine, with odds quoted around the internet as low as 1 million to 1 and as high as 6 million to 1.

There might be one or two double eagles on thePGA Tour, and there might be 15 or 20 holes in one.

The elder Syring said that Danny was always making fun of him, because he had made 11 ace and never made one.

On the 11th hole of the Nicklaus Tournament Course, with his father by his side, Syring put his tee shot on the left side of the fairway.

I hit the ball high, and I always thought that was why I hit it. I hit the ball so high that it came down and stopped.

The ball was not seen on the putting surface as the group reached the green.

Green said his wife got out of the cart and asked him where his ball was.

I took a picture and posted it on Facebook, I was pretty excited.

When he made the first one, I told him that it was like making five ace.

A second albatross

The photo had to be taken down after four holes. On the 15th hole, one of the toughest holes in the rotation of the PGA Tour's American Express tournament, his drive left him in the fairway 205 yards from the cup.

It looked good, because it was a little against the wind. I was the only one who could see it because my dad is 62 and the Greens are older.

The ball had rolled over a hump that divided the green from left to right.

He hits the ball very high. If it was a normal trajectory, it would have hit the front of the green and run to the back. Danny said it might have been in the hole. The ball is in the hole after we went up there.

Kevin said it was almost like a dream.

The father and son had just enough time to toss their clubs in the back of their car and head toward Los Angeles International Airport after the frost delay at the PGA West.

The time crunch might have led to a three-putt on the 16th hole for a bogey and to hit an approach shot into a greenside Bunker on the 18th hole for a 32 on the back nine and a round of 70.

I was 6 under for those two holes and shot 70. I wouldn't have bogeyed two of the last three.

A decorated high school player in New Jersey who contemplated turning pro while playing at the University of Tampa, is now working for a medical employment recruiting company. In the last three months, he said, he probably plays no more than three times a month.

As for the two double eagles, he hopes he doesn't make them again.

Who would believe that? He laughed.

There is something missing from his golf resume, despite making the two double eagles.

He said he would trade one of the double eagles for a hole in one.
