The budget furniture chain Ikea temporarily closed all of its stores in Russia because of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, causing a rush of shoppers to its stores.

In a statement shared with news organizations, the company said it was closing stores to support the safety of its workers and because the conflict had caused major issues to its supply chain.

Photographers shared on social media photos and videos that showed long lines outside some Ikea stores in Russia. The stores were closed on Thursday.

The Ikea stores in Moscow advised customers to leave the lines because it would be difficult to serve all of them at the same time, according to local journalists.

Ikea is among a number of major US and European companies who are either temporarily stopping their operations in Russia or pulling out entirely because of the conflict.

Apple, Nike, H&M, Disney, and Warner Bros. are some of the companies that limit or cease services there. In protest at Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the oil companies of Shell and BP sold their stakes in the state-backed energy giant.

As leading freight and shipping companies stopped delivering to the country, foreign retailers who continued to operate in Russia would find it difficult to stock their stores or distribution centers.

The number of companies making deliveries by road is rapidly diminishing, according to a spokesman for the German federal logistics association.
